It’s remarkable that the people of Egypt protested a 30 year dictatorship and succeeded in changing a regime through demonstrations. If you look at history, it usually takes a war, many many lives lost on both sides, and a much longer struggle to take a dictator out of power.

This achievement isn’t just inspiring for the people of Egypt, but it gives a new hope for people that face oppression all over the world.

Here’s a great quote from Obama’s spech on Friday:

Egypt has played a pivotal role in human history for over 6,000 years. But over the last few weeks, the wheel of history turned at a blinding pace as the Egyptian people demanded their universal rights. We saw mothers and fathers carrying their children on their shoulders to show them what true freedom might look like. We saw young Egyptians say, “For the first time in my life, I really count. My voice is heard. Even though I’m only one person, this is the way real democracy works.”

Bourdain on Egypt’s Uprising

Anthony Bourdain reflects on a recent visit to Egypt for No Reservations.

Seeing what’s happening in Egypt on the TV, I think back to when we made our show there. The price of flour had just gone up and there had been bread riots recently. The army, someone told me, controlled bread distribution. And bread makes up as much as 70% of the average Egyptian’s daily diet (more by some accounts). We wanted to shoot “ful”, the all-too-typical working man’s breakfast for much of Egypt; a watery plate of chick peas and broth, accompanied by a stack of flatbread—usually sold in the street. But our government handler wouldn’t allow it…

The Plan

On Friday, I somehow got on one my favorite topics – traveling. My friend told me about an event he’ll be attending called How to Travel Around the World, Before You’re 65. Unfortunately, I’m already double booked on January 20th (Oh Thursdays, you are so popular). But I was inspired reading the description for the talk. My dream has always been to travel to each continent. At 30, I’ve already seen 3. So, why set a goal for tackling the other 4? Here we go.

Visit all seven continents by January 1. 2015.
North America
Europe
South America
Asia
Australia
Africa
Antarctica

Note: there are some discrepancies regarding the actual number of continents. I’ve read valid arguments for 5-8. But I’ve always said 7 and 7 is a lucky number so we’ll go with that for this exercise. Especially, since it works out nicely at 1 per year.

Happy New Year

Things I learned on New Years Eve 2010:

- 30 sounds really old. Seriously, “She’s 30!!!” doesn’t sound very appealing to a wide eyed 22 year old. And, that look of shock sort of stings in a hilarious sort of way. Maybe I look older with straight hair? #noimnotstillinschool

- Sometimes you want to make sure you remember important events or special occasions. A great way to decrease your alcohol content (and halve your tab at the end of the night) is to drink a soda, perhaps a ginger & cran, in between each adult beverage. That way you still have a drink in your hand (classier than water) for the constant toasts. #0shots=0mistakes

- Yes, Home Bartending is trending. Upon entering this open bar scene – sip slow. #notcomplaining

- It is necessary to point out the distinction between a band playing at a party and a band’s track playing at said party. Particularly in a late night facebook status update. No Girl Talk did not actually perform – but this awesome mashup did start a dance party. #Fail

- Apparently there is an instinctual lull at the 20 min point of every conversation. It gives you a moment to glance around for predators! #watchoutforthatraptor

- 7 = The number of minutes a woman is obligated to speak to a guy who just bought her a drink. Did you know, women can naturally sense when 7 min have passed – no stopwatch necessary!?! #scienceofdating

- Some guys from Buffalo were hopelessly lost and struggling to get to Williamsburg – very, very early this morning. After showing them the correct platform to catch the L train to Brooklyn and the number of stops to their destination they informed me that they might never see me again. They asked if that bothered me. I replied, “That’s NY for you”. #tragedy
